Timeline
1980
Starting the Infotech journey
Infotech started as a sub-distributor for Wang products, focussing specifically on clients in the South African Public Sector.
1982
Joining the Mertech Group
The Mergon Foundation Trust and BNF Trust are collectively known as the Mertech Group and started the journey with Infotech in 1982, eventually becoming its majority shareholder.
1983
Three years at the top
Infotech records highest sales revenue for Wang products in Southern Africa for three consecutive years.
1989
Diversifying: Technicare
InfoTech launch a first-of-its-kind service in an era when outsourcing of maintenance and support to third parties was a new concept in South Africa. Technicare supported software and systems nationally, which the original suppliers Infotech no longer willing or able to support.
1992
Peak of the distributor phase
Infotech is a sought-after distributor, representing multiple international brands in South Africa including BI Inc., Ericsson, Motorola, NCS, Microsoft, Banyan, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel.
1993
Launching in-house development
Infotech’s first research and development division is launched. Later, this would become our core business.
1994
First international share transaction
IBM buys 25% of the Infotech subsidiary Technicare.
1994
Founding of the Infotech Foundation
The Infotech Foundation is formed, by a donation from the Mergon Foundation Trust, to benefit previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. The foundation’s trust deed specifically states that the majority trustees must be from the black community and beneficiaries must be previously disadvantaged.
1995
37% p.a. growth confirmed
Audited financial statements show Infotech, Mertech and other group companies’ revenue delivered a compound annual growth rate of 37% per year since inception in 1980.
1997
Black Economic Empowerment
Infotech introduces Pamodzi Investment Holdings to Technicare. Pamodzi subsequently purchased IBM’s 25% stake and started to play an active role on the board.
1998
Realisation of capital
Technicare is sold for R150 million. A substantial part of the proceeds was invested for future expansion.
1999
Founding of Blown Fibre
Infotech Cabling Division is turned into an independent company focused on the sales and distribution of blown fibre technology, using Fibre Flow as its core product.
2000
Positioning for the future
Infotech emerges as a technology holdings entity, focussing specifically on developing leading-edge intellectual property and using it to create new business ventures.
2001
Strategic acquisition: Quality Engineering Development
Infotech acquires Quality Engineering Development (Pty) Ltd, a technology consulting and engineering company focused on military aviation.
2002:
Star of the group
In June 2002, Infotech concluded its first financial year with home-grown products and services accounting for over 50% of group revenue.
2002
Profitable joint ventures
Infotech formed the first of several joint ventures with major corporate business partners as part of its drive towards commercialising its proprietary solutions. In a joint venture with Wesbank, a leading vehicle finance institution in South Africa, Infotech launches Mobile Data (Pty) Ltd, bringing ground-breaking vehicle telematics to consumer and fleet management sectors in South Africa and globally.
2004
Black Economic Empowerment
Since 1994, Infotech led several BEE in association with the Mergon Foundation Trust and the Infotech Foundation. A Black Economic Empowerment transaction is concluded with a group.
2005
Celebrating 25 years
2006
Realisation of capital
Infotech sells its 50% stake in Mobile Data (Pty) Ltd to FirstRand Investment Holding (Pty) Limited. The Vehicle Telematics business is also sold to Tracker Network (Pty) Ltd.
2007
Expansion into energy efficiency
Infotech enters a joint venture deal to form Enermatics Energy (Pty) Ltd. Enermatics Energy develops and manufactures a local smart-meter solution and control systems, used by municipalities and utility companies in demand-side management, contributing to alleviate the looming energy crisis.
Infotech co-founded Mobile Data – a company providing a real-time transaction processing system to facilitate airtime, electricity, or other token-based product transactions.
The ‘Authentically Infotech’ certification is used to identify and endorse the Infotech standards of innovation, integrity, and quality. All these brands, regardless of their diverse markets, are trusted names and have these characteristics in common. They also have the benefit of shared knowledge, research, and insight from the Infotech RED team.

2009
Co-founds Intellibureau Solutions
Intellibureau provides Infotech-based platform for tracking personnel and assets.
2012
Mobile Data and Enermatics Energy evolve into self-sustaining entities.
Each company has their own Executive Management and Boards.
Merging with iSanity and restructuring Infotech into a technology holdings company.
The restructuring resulted in the establishment of three wholly-owned subsidiaries, Infotech RED – the R&D; company compiling, expanding, and protecting all intellectual property, Intellibureau Solutions – commercial arm of the group.
iSanity – niche Storage Provider and Managed IT service provider for INFINIDAT and introducing the INFINIDAT Brand into the South African Market. iSanity managed and distributed INFINIDAT in South Africa from 2014 to 2018 until the market was established enough for INFINIDAT to appoint a country manager and partner with a local distribution for INFINIDAT brand.
2017
Infotech announces market-leading acquisition 2017
Infotech Limited is proud to announce that Urbanise, a globally renowned provider of IoT (Internet of Things) and Service Delivery platform for buildings, has finalised its acquisition deal with Infotech.
Urbanise is an ASX listed global creator of a cloud-based platform for delivering building services, with offices in Australia, Dubai, Singapore, Bulgaria, and South Africa.
The acquisition included multifaceted INFOTECH-based mobile asset tracking and management platform Intelligen™ and established smart utilities cloud platform Wattkeeper®, (Enermatics), and is effective from 4 January 2017.
Urbanise has initiated a share placement to secure the necessary funds to acquire both Intelligen™ and Wattkeeper® as a going concern, from Infotech Limited.
The deal was completed on the 6th of February 2017 once South African Reserve Bank regulatory approval was received. In addition to providing the standard features of live vehicle tracking, Intelligen™ gathers critical data which will assist the user to make informed decisions, optimise performance and eliminate risks.
Through the acquisition the market can now benefit from a high-tech and feature rich resource that allows for proactive and reactive mobile resource and asset tracking management. Through the innovative integration of Intelligen™ with a multitude of mobile devices, this powerful management tool allows for real-time monitoring, route optimisation, prioritisation and dispatching which offers substantial cost savings to customers through better management of resources and assets.
Wattkeeper® is an established cloud platform providing innovative smart meter solutions to the energy market, focusing on technology to help users generate tenant bills and common area bills, compare tariffs, and optimise usage, manage unique smart switching schedules, generate reports and business intelligence around utilities. Through its acquisition of Wattkeeper®, Urbanise will integrate a cloud-based micro-utility billing solution that enables rapid deployment, billing and reading of smart meters for electricity, water, and gas. It will also bring into its services portfolio a suite of smart meter devices that are designed to enable automated meter reading, pre-paid and post-paid business models and smart automation models that can limit utility consumption.
2017
iSanity was made independent
iSanity was not part of the Acquisition and had to become an independent company. Infotech is the majority shareholder within iSanity with full support from Mergon Foundation within the group.
2022
Infotech Integrated Solutions
iSanity is proud to announce that iSanity is now part of the Infotech Group. iSanity will now trade as Infotech Integrated Solutions which forms part of the rich history of Infotech and being disruptive Information Technology Company with over 40 years track record in South Africa.
